Equipment for monitoring longitudinal forces between the wheels (27) of a vehicle and the track (35) consists of at least one displacement transducer (38, 40) arranged to monitor any longitudinal movement of the wheel relative to the bogie; and an accelerometer (42, 43) arranged to measure longitudinal acceleration. The low frequency forces can be determined from the displacement measurements, and the high frequency forces can be determined from the accelerometer measurements. These forces are a contributing factor to the development of rolling contact fatigue, and the equipment enables features of the track or the vehicle which exacerbate such forces to be identified.
