PURPOSE: A discharge lamp lighting apparatus and a rear light apparatus are provided to prevent non-uniformity of luminance for a plurality of discharge lamps. CONSTITUTION: A discharge lamp lighting apparatus comprises an electronic transformer having a common primary winding(11) and at least a first secondary winding(12(1)) and a second secondary winding(12(2)); a first cold cathode discharge tube having an electrode connected to a high voltage terminal of the first secondary winding of the electronic transformer; a second cold cathode discharge tube having an electrode connected to the other electrode of the first cold cathode discharge tube, and the other electrode connected to a high voltage terminal of the second secondary winding of the electronic transformer; and a high frequency power circuit connected to the primary winding of the electronic transformer. Low voltage terminals of the first and second secondary windings of the electronic transformer are grounded, respectively, such that voltages with inverted phases are applied to the high voltage terminals of the first and second secondary windings of the electronic transformer.
