PURPOSE: A bi-directional slide type mobile terminal and a method thereof, particularly for easily performing a camera or a communication function without operating buttons by switching a mobile terminal to a call mode or a camera mode, are provided to reduce battery power consumption according to using of a display part and accurately sense an opening/closing state of an upper housing by a position sensing sensor. CONSTITUTION: A position state of an upper housing is sensed by a position sensing sensor such as a hall effect switch. A state of a mobile terminal is changed to a standby mode, a call mode and a camera mode according to the sensed position of the upper housing. An operation of the mobile terminal is controlled according to each mode.
