PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for deinterlacing an image signal are provided to change an angle of an interpolated direction according to the direction of a peripheral boundary and perform intra-field interpolation with respect to pixels in which motion exists. CONSTITUTION: An intra-field pixel processing unit(130) detects data to be interpolated with a surface region in a field using pixels of a field between two fields of a current field. A motion value generating unit(140) detects the first to third motion values and the first and second motion degree values using field data before one field, two fields, three fields and four fields with the current field. A history control unit(150) detects a history value using the first and second motion values. A quick image processing unit(160) detects a quick motion image using the first motion value, the surface region and the history value. A film image processing unit(180) detects a film image and a caption region using the first and second motion degree values, the first motion value and a caption region vertical/horizontal position signal, and determines field data to be interpolated. A still image processing unit(190) accumulates the first motion value and the second motion degree value, and detects a still image. An inter-field noise image processing unit(175) detects a noise image between adjacent fields using the first motion value and the history value. A motion boundary maintaining image processing unit(170) detects a motion boundary maintaining image using the first and third motion values and the history value. A synthesizing unit(200) selectively interpolates data to be interpolated in the field and inter-data before one field or three fields of the current field according to the detected result.
