PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling operation of a reciprocating compressor, and a method thereof to secure the maximum compression volume of the compressor by increasing stroke by applying alternating and direct voltage are provided to improve the operation efficiency of a compressor. CONSTITUTION: A stroke detector(200) detects a piston stroke distance of a compressor as stroke. A comparator(300) compares the stroke output from the stroke detector with a stroke command value for outputting a difference signal. A direction voltage command value generator(100) detects temperatures of a suction port and a discharge port of the compressor as load and generates a direct voltage command value if the load corresponds to a load condition. A controller(400) controls stroke by varying an alternating voltage applied to the compressor. If receiving the direct voltage command value, the controller applies a direct voltage and an alternating voltage variable according to the load to the compressor for increasing stroke.
