PURPOSE: A handover method in a mobile communication system is provided to save system resources and shorten the time of searching for an uplink signal by segmenting the size of a search window and searching preferentially for the highest probability section in the setup of a handover path. CONSTITUTION: If a handover event occurs(S12), a target node B segments an MS(Mobile Station) code search section into plural unit search sections(S14). The path searcher of the target node B determines the order of priority for each unit search section according to the probability distribution of path setup(S16). Based on the priority order, the path searcher searches for an uplink code contained in an uplink signal transmitted from the MS, starting from the first ranked search section(S20). In case that a synchronization with the MS is acquired at a specific search section(S22), the target node B starts multi-path searching for the specific search section and executes communication with the MS(S26).
