PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for improving picture quality in a highlight are provided to generate an appropriate mask for a highlighted portion where picture quality is deteriorated, add the mask to general dot data and print the added result, to thereby improve the picture quality in the highlighted portion. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for improving picture quality in a highlight includes a print data processor(80), a highlight detector(120), a pattern generator(130), a pattern selector(140), a combining part(200), and a printing part(300). The print data processor processes input RGB video signals and generates dot data. The highlight detector detects a highlight from each of input colors using a threshold value. The pattern generator respectively generates masks for colors detected as highlights. The pattern selector selects a pattern for each color from the masks. The combining part adds up the dot data generated by the print data processor and the output pattern of the pattern selector. The printing part prints an image corresponding to the output of the combining part.
