PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus and method for treating waste food capable of saving additional incidental expense for creating smooth activity environment for microorganisms by degrading waste food using microorganisms naturally created along with waste food and forming an opening unit on a lower part of a microbe reactor so that oxygen is supplied and moisture is discharged through the opening unit. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for treating waste food comprises a microbe reactor(12) in which waste food, microorganisms for degrading the waste food and filter medium are contained; an opening unit(18) formed on the lower surface of the microbe reactor; an exhaust part(16) communicated with an opening part formed in an upper part of the microbe reactor; a power transmission means fixed to an outer part of a body(11) comprising the microbe reactor; an agitator(15) operated by power of the power transmission means and installed inside the microbe reactor; and a water collection unit(23) and an intake part installed in a lower part of the microbe reactor to collect water generated when organic matters are degraded and intake air so that the organic matters are degraded by the air and microorganisms, wherein the intake part is consisted of an intake port(19-1) comprising a fan(20) or an air pump, and wherein the agitator further comprises a rotary shaft(13), an agitation rod, and an agitation blade(14) with a brush.
