PURPOSE: A nonlinear signal receiver is provided to search for an exact timing phase by using a model which shows nonlinear channels of a high-density digital magnetic storage apparatus as transition pulses selected according to a future bit and a past bit, thereby reducing timing jitters and a bias. CONSTITUTION: An A/D converter(100) samples an analog signal received by being reproduced from a data storage apparatus or received through a transmission channel, and converts the analog signal into a digital signal. An equalizer(102) compensates for a deteriorated property of the digital signal, and approximates a channel property. A detector(104) compares an output value of the equalizer(102) with a predetermined value to output the compared values as digital values. A modeling unit(106) models the output values of the detector(104) and a channel. A timing recover unit(108) obtains a timing phase gradient from two of plural tap values of the modeling unit(106), and controls a sampling timing phase by using the obtained gradient value.
