PURPOSE: A television having functions of study and speech recognition is provided to cause a user's interest in study of a foreign language by enabling a user to memorize a sentence of the foreign language during the watch of the television. CONSTITUTION: An A/D(Analog to Digital) converter(211) converts an analog speech signal inputted from a mike into a digital signal. A voice recognition DSP(Digital Signal Processor)(203) converts digital speech information inputted from the A/D converter into text information and recognizes it. A ROM(207) stores the text information. A flash memory(221) stores sentence information inputted by a user. A register(205) temporarily stores the digital speech information for comparison with the sentence information. A microcomputer(201) compares the text information with the sentence information stored in the flash memory and generates caption information in order to display the text information and text information equal to the sentence information as a caption on a television. A caption signal generator(215) generates a video signal corresponding to the caption information. A mute signal generator(217) makes a part of video information mute. A switch part(219) makes the caption signal and the video signal overlapped with the video signal.
