PURPOSE: A device and a method for performing a multi-font function in a portable terminal are provided to embed a font manager program in a portable phone, thereby generating font data corresponding to a font format of the portable phone without downloading the program, while downloading the font data in connection with other portable phone. CONSTITUTION: A controller displays a kind of a menu(801), and displays a kind of a short message selected by a user(802). The controller displays a window for writing a sentence(803), and displays a pop-up menu for displaying a font menu(804). The controller displays a kind of fonts on a display(805). The user selects a font through a key comprised in a key input unit when the kind of the fonts is displayed(806). If a setup of the font menu is completed, the controller senses the setup(813), and displays a changed font when the user writes a sentence(814). If the user inputs a menu key for changing the selected font, the controller performs a font changing process(815). If the sentence is completely written(816), the controller transmits the written sentence(817).
