PURPOSE: A washing machine for sterilizing the laundry and a washing method are provided to sterilize the laundry without a harmful influence on the health of users and with silver liquid and to improve convenience for users by executing a set of sterilization washing steps. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine for sterilizing the laundry is composed of a cycle selection unit(20) which has a pasteurizing washing button for choosing at least a pasteurizing washing cycle; a control unit which calls out data from a memory unit(14) to perform a specific washing cycle input by the cycle selection unit; a silver solution generating unit(16) controlled by the control unit to generate the silver solution; and a silver solution supply/discharge unit(15) which sprays the silver solution, generated by the silver solution generating unit, into a washing tub and discharges properly the used silver solution. The cycle selection unit comprises a plurality of buttons which have at least the sterilizing washing button mounted on an operation panel.
