PURPOSE: A method for controlling a mode and a transmission rate of a vocoder in a mobile communication system is provided to convert a vocoder mode and a transmission rate in a transcoder within an MGW(Media Gateway) at a request of a BSC(Base station Controller), and to inform the BSC of the converted mode and the transmission rate, thereby effectively performing the vocoder mode and transmission rate conversion. CONSTITUTION: An MS(110) makes a voice call after setting up a session with a BSC(121)(400). The BSC(121) sends a voice data frame to an MGW(131) by including a voice data transmission rate and information bits in an A2p-reverse frame message(405). The MGW(131) transmits the voice data frame to the BSC(121) by including a transmission rate and information bits in a A2p-forward frame message(410). The BSC(121) determines whether to convert an SMV(Selective Mode Vocoder) mode(420), and designates an SMV control request signal to transmit the signal to the MGW(131)(430). The MGW(131) receives an SMV control frame(440). The MGW(131) sends an SMV control ACK message to the BSC(121)(450). The BSC(121) interprets processed results of the MGW(131)(460). The BSC(121) sends the voice data frame by including a voice data transmission rate and information bits in a A2p-reverse frame(470). The MGW(131) sends the voice data frame by including a transmission rate and information bits in a A2p-forward frame(480).
