PURPOSE: A method for controlling a mode and a transmission rate of a vocoder in a mobile communication system is provided to convert a vocoder mode and a transmission rate in a transcoder within an MGW(Media Gateway) at a request of a BSC(Base station Controller), and to inform the BSC of the converted mode and the transmission rate, thereby effectively performing the vocoder mode and transmission rate conversion.
