PURPOSE: Provided are polyimide-based varnish for forming an alignment layer having high uniaxial aligning property, an alignment layer formed by using the varnish and an IPS type LCD having excellent contrast and high view angle. CONSTITUTION: The polyimide-based varnish for forming an alignment layer of an IPS type LCD which performs display by forming an electric field predominantly parallel to the surface of a substrate, can form an alignment layer having a delta value of 1.3 or more as calculated by the following formula 1. In formula 1, A is an absorbance caused by C-N stretching in an imide ring when IR ray having a polarized component parallel to the alignment-treating direction is inputted to the alignment layer; A is an absorbance caused by C-N stretching in an imide ring when IR ray having a polarized component perpendicular to the alignment-treating direction is inputted to the alignment layer; and d is a thickness of the alignment layer expressed in nm units.
