PURPOSE: An image display apparatus having an aspect ratio varying function and a method for controlling the image display apparatus are provided to control an aspect ratio in response to the position of a user and to easily find the position of a remote controller. CONSTITUTION: An image display apparatus having an aspect ratio varying function includes a tuner(100) for turning a channel, a video processor(200) for processing the channel tuned by the tuner into a signal to be displayed as a main picture or a sub-picture, and a detector(301) for detecting the position of a remote controller. The image display apparatus further includes a controller(410) for outputting a control signal such that the aspect ratio of the main/sub picture of the video signal output from the video processor is varied in response to the detection result of the detector, and a scaler(510) for processing the video signal such that the video signal is output as the main/sub picture on a display(600) in response to the aspect ratio according to the control signal of the controller.
