PURPOSE: A safety start system and a method of a vehicle are provided to prevent sudden start of a vehicle in advance by starting an engine only when a foot brake is operated and a gear is in a neutral position. CONSTITUTION: A safety start system of a vehicle is composed of an engine RPM(Revolution Per Minute) detecting unit for outputting RPM of an engine; a foot brake input detecting unit for sensing if a brake is operated; a gear position detecting unit for sensing if a gear is in a neutral position(N); a vehicle speed sensing unit operated with the foot brake input detecting unit in parallel to detect the speed of the vehicle; a vacuum unit(70) driven by operation power applied from a battery(80) to suck in the air in a hydro-bag when a key switch is in an ACC(Accessory) state; a control unit for starting the engine when the foot brake is operated and a gear is in a neutral position, preventing the gear from being shifted until RPM of the engine is decreased below a reference value after starting the engine, and turning off the vacuum unit when the engine rotates; a gear shift lever lock unit for fixing the gear in the neutral position according to the control unit if RPM of the engine is over the reference value; and a starter for starting the engine according to controls of the control unit.
