PURPOSE: A method for controlling a portable terminal to reduce power consumption is provided to gate a pilot signal or a channel quality signal to enter an idle mode for reducing transmission data or to convert into an active mode from the idle mode, thereby remarkably reducing the power consumption of a terminal. CONSTITUTION: A portable terminal(10) transmits signals showing communication states to a base station(20) at maximum rate in an active state. If a user does not receive a wireless data service, the portable terminal(10) gates the signals transmitted to the base station(20) at predetermined rate, and sends the gated signals in an idle mode. If the user operates the terminal(10) to escape from the idle mode, the gated signals are sent at maximum rate in the active state again.
