COMPOSITION FOR PROTECTION OF LIVER AND TREATMENT AND PREVENTION OF LIVER CIRRHOSIS AND LIVER FIBROSIS CONTAINING HONOKIOL OR MAGNOLOL SEPARATED FROM MAGNOLIAE CORTEX

PURPOSE: A composition for protection of the liver and treatment and prevention of liver cirrhosis and liver fibrosis containing honokiol or magnolol separated from Magnoliae Cortex is provided. The honokiol or magnolol has efficacy in inhibiting apoptosis of liver cells, preventing necrosis and damage of liver cells by various toxicities and promoting programmed cell death of hepatic stellate cells. CONSTITUTION: The composition for protection of the liver and treatment and prevention of liver cirrhosis contains honokiol or magnolol represented by the formula 1 or 2. The effective dose of the honokiol or magnolol is 1 to 2,000mg/kg weight. The honokiol is 3',5-di-prophenyl-£1,1'-biphenyl|-2,4'-diol(3'-5-di-2-prophyenyl-£1,1'-binyl|-2,4'diol), the magnolol is 5,5'-di-2-prophenyl-£1,1'-biphenyl|-2,4'-diol(5,5'-5-di-2-prophyenyl-£1,1'-binyl|-2,4'diol). In an experiment, induction of DNA fragmentation is identified in hepatic stellate cells treated with the honokiol or magnolol. The honokiol or magnolol is used as a component for treatment of liver fibrosis.
