PURPOSE: A method for detecting metal disturbance in a magnetic tracking system is provided to improve accuracy of the magnetic tracking system by detecting existence and effect of field response articles such as metal tools. CONSTITUTION: A method for detecting metal disturbance in a magnetic tracking system forms energy fields of a plurality of different frequencies around an object to be tracked. A plurality of signals generated at the object having different frequencies are received in response to the energy fields. Spatial coordinates of the object are repeatedly calculated based on the received signals. Whether the energy fields are disturbed by an article around the object is determined by checking convergence of the calculated result.
