PURPOSE: Provided are an iridium compound useful as a deep blue phosphorescence compound with improved color purity and with lower electric power consumption, and an organic electroluminescence device employing the same. CONSTITUTION: The iridium compound is represented by the formula 1, wherein R1-R7 are independently hydrogen, cyano, hydroxy, halogen, or substituted or non-substituted alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl, aryl, arylalkyl, aryloxy, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heteroaryloxy, cycloalkyl, heterocycloalkyl or alkylthio, -Si(R')(R'')(R''') or -N(R')(R'') (in which, R', R'' and R''' are independently hydrogen or C1-C20 alkyl), at least two selected from R1-R7 may be linked each other, S is a nonanionic bidentate ligand, a is an integer of 1-3, b is an integer of 0-2, a+b is 3, provided that compounds in which all of R1-R7 are hydrogen, a is 3 and b is 0, and compounds in which all of R1, R2, R3, R4 and R7 are hydrogen, both of R5 and R6 are fluorine, X is picolinate, a is 3 and b is 1 are excluded. The organic electroluminescence device comprises an organic membrane containing the iridium compound between a pair of electrodes.
