PURPOSE: A portable terminal for checking the number of group members through an automatic recognition function and a method therefor are provided to read travelers' cards by a portable checking machine to check the number of group members, and to compare the checked results with a traveler list, thereby automatically confirming absent travelers. CONSTITUTION: A computer(30) manages tourists(40) and the number of visiting members of travel agencies/public institutes. A portable checking terminal(50) receives a group tourist list and a visiting member list through a downloading process, and is carried by a tour guide when group tourists(40) or group members travel. If the number of group members or the tourists(40) should be checked, the portable checking terminal(50) checks an RF electronic chip credit card or an RF electronic chip card(60) to confirm whether the number of the tourists(40) is correct.
