PURPOSE: Provided are a catalyst composition which is excellent in the activity of homo- or co-polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, its preparation method, a polymerization system containing the catalyst composition, a method for preparing at least one addition polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer by using the catalyst composition, and a polymer composition prepared by the method. CONSTITUTION: The catalyst composition comprises at least one cationic metal-pair composite comprising at least one metal atom pair and represented by the formula I, wherein the pair comprises a first metal atom M1 and a second metal atom M2, and the two metal atoms M1 and M2 have a through-space inter-nuclear distance of or greater than 1.5 Angstrom and less than 20 Angstrom. In the formula I, M1 is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, Au, Fe, Co, Rh, Cr and Mn; M2 is selected from the group consisting of Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, Au, Fe, Co, Rh, Cr and Mn; L1 represents a first ligand set; L2 represents a second ligand set; L3 represents a third ligand set; R1 represents a first anionic hydrocarbyl-containing radical set; R2 represents a second anionic hydrocarbyl-containing radical set; S1 represents a first labile ligand set; S2 represents a second labile ligand set; A1 to A8 represent a coordinate bond set; WCA represents a weak coordinate anion; a, b, h, k, m and p are 0 or 1; , and c are 1; d, e, r, s, t and u are 0, 1, 2 or 3; f and g are 1, 2, 3 or 4; and 0=d+e=5, 1=m+p=2, 1=r+s=5, 0=t+u=5, 2=f+g=7, d+f+r+t=4, and e+g+s+u=4.
