PURPOSE: A device for improving performance of a heater using an EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) cooler and a control method thereof are provided to improve performance of the heater by making EGR gas pass through the EGR cooler and leading a coolant heated in the EGR cooler to the heater side. CONSTITUTION: A device for improving performance of a heater using an EGR cooler formed in the middle of an exhaust gas recirculation pipe(14) to lower temperature of EGR gas comprises a bypass line(40) connecting the middle of the exhaust recirculation pipe where the output side of the EGR cooler is situated and the middle of an exhaust line(13); a check valve(50) formed to a spot where the bypass line and the exhaust gas recirculation pipe are connected, to selectively operate a flow direction of EGR gas passing through the EGR cooler; and a control part(60) controlling operation of the EGR valve and the check valve.
