A sliding type portable wireless terminal and a method for controlling a sliding operation therein are provided to slide a sub body to open/close a keypad of a main body, and to automatically carry out a sliding up/down operation, so that a user does not have to manually manipulate the sliding operation. The first gear is installed in an upper section of a main body, while the second gear is formed on a rear side of a sub body in length direction to be engaged with the first gear. A motor(115) supplies a rotational force to rotate the first gear in connection with the first gear. A controller(10) drives the motor(115) by responding to a predetermined key input for sliding controlling. The controller(10) supplies a control signal to a motor driver(60), so that the motor driver(60) can presume a current open/closed state of the sub body when the motor(115) is driven, while driving the motor(115) in a direction that closes the sub body if the sub body is in open state.
