Apparatus and method for operating day/night mode of monitoring camera using a measuring brightness of area without lighting area

PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for operating a day/night mode of a monitoring camera are provided to measure the brightness of an object by using only a region having no influence due to the illumination, thereby automatically controlling the illumination for operating day/night modes under the measured brightness. CONSTITUTION: A camera(100) photographs a constant area of an object as day mode or night mode according to control from the outside. A sensing unit(200) senses brightness of the object according to the control from the outside. The control unit(300) controls entirely operation of the camera. The control unit checks a region excluded from the illumination region by excepting the wavelength of the region influenced by the illumination from the brightness sensing signal of the object inputted from the sensing unit, measures the brightness of the object from the checked region and then discriminates day mode or night mode. In case of day mode, the control unit outputs a control signal for turning an illumination unit(400) off. In case of night mode, the control unit outputs a control signal for turning the illumination unit on. A storage unit(500) stores and outputs an image signal photographed by the camera according to the control of the control unit.
