When the two instrument (1) arms (2) are moved out of their working position the surfaces where they adjoin one another are separated by recesses or indentation in one or other surface. The indentations are bow shaped and run flush over into the associated arm. Grooves can be used also to indent the arm surfaces and the arm swivel axis passes through the recess etc. The swivel join (10,11) of the arms can be released to allow the arms to be moved in parallel to offset the axis passage points in the two respective instrument arms. The arms can be joined by means of a flattened bearing pin (12) engaging the arm hole (10) whose width lies between maximum pin diameter and pin width in the flattened part. In this case, the bearing area (11) is at least of maximum pin diameter.
