The method is for visualizing three dimensional data on a monitor by means of an input device. The input device has means for selecting a reference point, means for setting a direction and means for adjusting a distance parameter. The method involves depicting the data set on the monitor and then selecting a point in the viewing area of the monitor. By means of the input device a reference point is selected which is projected onto a virtual surface whose geometric arrangement in relation to the image area of the monitor is known. The input device is used to set a direction which goes from the reference point to the selected point. The input device is further used to set a distance which is the distance between the reference point and the selected point. A depiction method of an area of the representation is manipulated, whereby this area has an adjustable geometric relationship to the selected point. Independent claims also cover a method of operation a medical examination device and a method of graphically positioning a layer to be measured.
