A number of piezoelectric elements (10) is used as an electrical generating unit (12) supplying energy to a spark gap antenna (20) placed close to tuned antennas (30) connected to control circuitry (32) by a dedicated conductor in a cable (34) with suitable encoding to identify signals emitted by the circuitry. The tuned antennas are selectively enabled or disabled to generate a coded signal in response to a mechanical impact event. An independent claim is included for a method of indicating occurrence of a mechanical impact event.
