Method whereby a sequence of measurements of a measurement spot is recorded using an optical fiber from one or more different points in the exhaust gas train. The measurements are fed to a pyrometer for recording and subsequent storage. An evaluation unit is used to determine an intensity profile over the duration of the measurements. Based on a calibration curve and the measurements, a temperature curve is determined and the resultant data are stored in an engine control unit together with matching engine-operating data. An independent claim is made for a device for exhaust-gas side measurement of temperatures in the exhaust gas chain of a combustion engine.
