The method involves driving the electrical machine at a first revolution rate (n1), allowing the electrical machine to run down in a free-running mode and evaluating the running down characteristic of the electrical machine, whereby a parameter (n2, deltat) characterizing the running down is determined and compared with a predefined reference value (deltatref). An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) an arrangement for determining a defect in an electrical machine, especially a generator.
