A pre-selected point (2) of the container (1) is subjected to a localized heating process, so that this part of the container material melts. The rise in temperature is generated by electromechanical vibrations above 20khz, e.g. between 20 and approx. 100khz, and an amplitude of between 5 and 150 micrometer. The container is fitted into a holder (4), and the head of a sonotrode (8) is brought into contact with the container, which executes a relative movement. The head has a sharp edge or a blade, which widens towards a booster (7).
