Reinforced plastic component manufacturing process involves molding a plastic insert with reinforcing fibers, locating insert in another tool and molding plastic onto the insert
An insert(12) based on a plastic matrix and reinforcing glass fibers(13) is molded in a first tool which corresponds to the shape of the area of the final plastic component(1) to be reinforced. The glass fibers(13) are oriented in directions to match the applied stresses in the final component. The insert is positioned in a cavity of a second tool for molding the final component and plastic is molded onto it by known methods, e.g. injection compression or similar. Load analysis is initially carried out on the final product(1) and the insert shape and fiber alignment are determined. Projections or recesses in the insert(12) connect with similar features in the second tool to ensure secure location in the latter. Undercuts, bores or similar features ensure positive attachment to the encapsulating plastic material. The same or different materials may be used for the insert and surrounding plastic. A coupling agent is used when different materials are used. Independent claims are included for: a) injection, compression or similar tools for molding the insert, the first tool molding the insert and the second molding the final component(1); b) a component produced by the claimed process which comprises a glass fiber reinforced plastic insert onto which plastic is molded.
