Chlorosulfonyl isocyanate and urethanes derived therefrom are used as ATRP initiators for the production of linear or (hyper-) branched polymers, comb-shaped polymers, block copolymers, macromonomers and star-shaped polymers. The use of chlorosulfonyl compounds of formula Cl-SO 2-N=C=O (Ia) and/or Cl-SO 2-NH-CO-X (Ib) as ATRP initiators for the production of linear or (hyper-) branched polymers, comb-shaped polymers, block copolymers, macromonomers and star-shaped polymers. X : OR 1, NR 1R 2, SR 1or R 1; R 11-20C aliphatic hydrocarbyl, a 5-12C cycloaliphatic residue or optionally substituted 6-14C aryl; R 2H or other groups as listed for R 1.
