Operating method for a combustion engine unit with a combustion engine (1) and catalytic converter (9) in the engine exhaust gas flow that has a loading region in which the catalytic converter overheats if measures for cooling the converter are omitted, in particular exhaust gas recirculation is omitted. Thus to prevent overheating exhaust gas recirculation is undertaken in conditions of high engine loading. An independent claim is made for a combustion engine unit.
