Method for low-emission turning-off of an external combustion petrol engine (1) with injection valves (2) and their control unit (21) and a control unit (13) for the ignition system that incorporates an engine speed signaler (18). Accordingly just before the engine comes to a standstill it is operated with different control times for the valves, i.e. the inlet valves close early and or the fuel injection valves are stopped before the engine stops. Then after the engine has stopped, the ignition system control unit is turned off.
