The method involves monitoring a first zone (10) for penetration by objects (9) and carrying out an emergency stop if an object is detected. It also involves determining the extent of a second zone (11) depending on a speed of at least one moving machine (1) component (3), monitoring the second zone for the penetration by objects and, if a n object is detected, carrying out a protective response to prevent the object from entering the first zone. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a machine for implementing the inventive method.
