Method for laboratory diagnosis of intrathecal immunoglobulin synthesis comprises measuring the concentration of free kappa immunoglobulin light chains in cerebrospinal fluid. Independent claims are included for: (a) a method for laboratory diagnosis of multiple sclerosis by measuring the concentration of free kappa immunoglobulin light chains in cerebrospinal fluid using nephelometry; and (b) a method for laboratory diagnosis of meningitis by measuring the concentration of free kappa immunoglobulin light chains in cerebrospinal fluid.
