Active composite material (I), for separating substances by solution-diffusion, comprises (A) anionic polyelectrolyte component(s) and (B) cationic component(s), in which (A) is a copolymer of (a1) methacrylate component(s) and (a2) anionic sulfoalkyl methacrylate ester(s) or salts thereof with optionally unsaturated 1-7C sulfoalkyl groups. Independent claims are also included for; (1) Composite membranes for separating substances as above, comprising a support coated with composite material (I); and (2) A method for the production of composite membranes as above by coating a support in succession with alcoholic solutions of (A) and (B).
