Instrument for measuring the transmission properties of plastic that is to be processed, e.g. welded, using a laser. The inventive instrument has a light emitting diode (2) as a light source arranged in a tube (7) on one side of a sample (15) so that a measurement section (8) corresponding to the thickness of the sample is created. On the other side of the sample is a light sensor or detector (3).
