A method for forming an ignitable fuel-air mixture in the combustion space of a fuel-injected petrol engine (2) that has a fuel-injection jet with a closing body. The engine can be operated in homogeneous or layered charging mode. In the latter the stroke of the closing body is adjusted, while in the former the stroke length is reduced relative to the latter and the duration of fuel injection increased.
