Method for determining the stability limit of coating layers applied to a surface in which a coating (2) is applied to a test body (1) and the probe body is fixed in a position such that the contour line (4) of the body forms an angle (6) with the gravitational force vector of between 0 and 90[deg]. The coating is allowed to harden and changes in the coating topology are determined dependent on coating thickness by making point measurements distributed over the body surface. The invention also relates to a corresponding use of the inventive method with the framework of coating of 3D substrates and in particular vehicle bodywork.
