The fuel injection system comprises a high-pressure pipe (14) between the high-pressure accumulator (12) and the fuel injection valve. The high-pressure pipe is longer than the required minimum length. The high-pressure pipe is measured in such a way that a negative pressure wave produced in the fuel injection valve (15) by the injection process arrives at the fuel injection valve as a positive wave during the last 66%, in particular 50% of injection period. The negative pressure goes out from the fuel injection valve and is reflected from the fuel high-pressure accumulator. An independent claim is also included for the method of designing the fuel injection system.
