The system has a radar based detection device for determining the traffic situation, e.g. distance to the preceding vehicle (20). A warning device informs the driver of the vehicle (10) about the state of the traffic using display elements, e.g. LEDs, arranged on the top and bottom edges of the rear or side mirror in view of the driver. An acoustic warning may also be provided. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle equipped with the warning system.
