The scanner comprises a transmitter (11) for sending pulsed electromagnetic radiation beam, a corresponding receiver (13) and a deflecting device (15). Transmitted radiation beam passes an observation region and thence is deflected towards the receiver. The radiation inlet and outlet surfaces are positioned within a spherical housing (21). The deflecting device (15) is driven so as to move relative to the transmitter and receiver, but the housing (21) is fixed w.r.t to the deflector (15).
