The tool has a holder and a counter holder (6,9) to clamp a sheet steel billet (7), and several intermediate height-adjustable spacers. The spacers (13) have associated power sensors (14), located in the power transmission path, to measure local sheet clamping force. Height adjustment of the spacers causes each sensor to be adjusted to individual measuring signal levels. Each sensor is operated by a signal-actuated actuator (17) with associated adjusting signal transmitter. The signals are dependent upon component-specific values, e.g. sheet thickness, material characteristics and/or shape of the component to be fabricated.
