A gas phase oxidation reactor has one or more endothermic or exothermic stages that take place in the presence of a heterogenic particle catalyst. The catalyst comprises one or more stacked perforated panel(s) (1) with a coefficient of heat conductivity of greater than 30 W/m/K. The perforations extend in-line through the stacked sheet metal plates and hold the catalyst particles. The stacked plates are surrounded around the edges by a sleeve separating the gas inlet zone (4) from the gas outlet zone (5). The gas inlet zone (4) from the gas outlet zone (5) are linked only via the perforations (1) in the panels. The panels are sheet metal (e.g. aluminum, copper, silver or their alloys), ceramic or graphite. The perforation diameter is less than 6 mm.
