The process uses a model with an outer shape corresponding to that of a product to be produced in the molding tool. The model is divided into two halves(1) along the parting plane of the molding tool and fastening and mounting features(2) are incorporated in both halves. Each model half is mounted in a tool frame(5) and each tool frame is filled with a castable, solidifiable material to create a molding tool half. Model halves(1) are produced by a rapid prototyping 3-D(three-dimensional) printing method. Both halves are produced in one process stage. A cooling system(6) is arranged in each tool frame(5) before casting of the backing alloy(M) occurs. After solidification of the alloy each model half is removed from its frame leaving a tool half for blow molding. Model halves have recesses(2) or pins(4) arranged in a desired shape and position, in particular in a grid form, for locating in corresponding features in a baseplate(3) of the tool frame. An independent claim is included for equipment for manufacturing a blow molding tool in which the model halves are produced by rapid prototyping and have fastening and mounting members(4) for correct location in a tool frame(5).
