Device has a coolant transport device for a temperature control medium, a heat exchanger close to the stack and a cooling heat exchanger for giving off thermal energy to the surroundings. The cooling circuit has a further heat exchanger (8) that carries a flow of exhaust gas from a gas generation system (3) as a heating medium. The further heat exchanger has at least one bypass (9,11) so that at least one of the media flows at least partly past the further heat exchanger. An independent claim is also included for: (a) a method of starting a fuel cell system.
