The control method uses a sensor stage for monitoring automobile condition data and at least one further factor relating to the travel situation, the condition data evaluated for detection of a critical situation, for release of reversible passenger restraints, using evaluation criteria adjusted in dependence on the further factor(s), including detection of a signal indicating use of a telephone and/or a traffic announcement signal.
