The gripping clamp (10) is used as a mounting for a hemispherical lens (12). The gripping clamp has two semicircular cutouts with gripping surfaces (22,24) which apply a radial force (F) to the edges (26) of the lens. The two D-shaped clamp members are held together by rod (34), which engages in blind bores (30,32) in the two D-shaped clamp members.
